Wealth Management FAQs
Common questions on planning and investing
What does a fiduciary financial advisor mean, and why does it matter?
A fiduciary financial advisor is legally required to act in your best interest at all times, not just recommend something that is “suitable.” At Animas Capital Management, we operate as a fiduciary, which means every recommendation we make is driven solely by what is right for you. We do not earn commissions on product sales. Our compensation is tied to your assets, so our success is directly aligned with yours. When you ask whether an advisor is a fiduciary, you are asking the single most important question you can ask before hiring one.
How does Animas Capital Management charge for its services?
Animas Capital Management uses a combination of compensation structures depending on the service provided, and we believe in being completely transparent about how that works.
For investment management, our compensation is straightforward: an annual fee based on the total value of assets we manage for you. This is an Asset based model, meaning our fee is tied to your portfolio value, not to buying or selling activity. When your portfolio grows, our compensation grows with it. When it does not, ours does not either. That alignment of interests is the foundation of how we manage investments.
For certain other services such as tax planning, insurance, and specific financial products, compensation may be structured differently, including flat fees or commissions depending on the product or service involved. We will always be upfront about how we are compensated for any service before you engage us, so there are never any surprises.
What never changes is our commitment to recommending what is genuinely right for your situation. Regardless of how a service is compensated, our obligation to act in your best interest guides every recommendation we make.
How do I know if I need a wealth manager?
You likely need a wealth manager when your financial life becomes too complex to manage well on your own. Common trigger points include approaching retirement, selling a business, inheriting money, managing multiple accounts with no coordinated strategy, or realizing that taxes, investments, and estate plans are all being handled separately with no one overseeing the full picture. At Animas Capital Management, we work with clients at exactly these moments to bring everything together into one cohesive, forward-looking plan.
How do I create reliable retirement income that does not run out?
Creating lasting retirement income requires coordinating four things: the right withdrawal sequence from your accounts, a Social Security strategy optimized for your situation, a portfolio structured to manage sequence-of-returns risk, and a tax-efficient drawdown plan. At Animas Capital Management, we address all four as part of a single retirement income strategy. We also integrate Defined Outcome ETF strategies for clients who need a defined level of downside protection during the years when their portfolio is most vulnerable to a bad market.
What is the best way to reduce taxes in retirement?
The most effective way to reduce taxes in retirement is to start planning well before you retire. Key strategies include Roth conversion planning in the years before retirement when your income may be lower, careful management of which accounts you draw from first to stay in lower tax brackets, coordinating withdrawals with Social Security timing to minimize the taxable portion of your benefit, and placing tax-efficient investments in taxable accounts while keeping higher-taxed assets in tax-deferred accounts. At Animas Capital Management, tax planning is embedded into every retirement strategy we build, not added on at the end.
